It Started With an Expedition
In 2014, what began as a scientific sailing expedition across the North Atlantic unexpectedly became the beginning of something much greater.
For 23 days, we sailed from Bermuda to Iceland alongside researchers from the 5 Gyres Institute, collecting seawater samples to study one of the most remote regions on Earth.
Surrounded by thousands of kilometers of open ocean, we expected to find one of the planet's last untouched places.
Instead, we found something that changed our lives forever.
A Discovery That Changed Everything
Every sample contained microplastics.
Even in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
Far away from cities.
Far away from rivers.
Far away from everything we thought could pollute the sea.
That moment forced us to confront a difficult reality.
Environmental problems do not recognize borders.
And neither should the solutions.
It became clear that science alone would never be enough.
People first needed to understand.
Then they needed to care.
Only then would they act.
From Science to Stories
When the expedition ended, another journey was just beginning.
Sergio Izquierdo and Rocío Ruiz founded Rescue The Planet with a simple but powerful belief:
